Key indicators for leadership for innovation

pdevelop-2
  • Tolerance for error – Leaders allow themselves and others to try untested ideas and to fail without punishment in order to be able to learn from the failure.
  • Approach towards risk – Leaders frame risk in the context of innovation and are able to present innovation opportunities in ways that do not limit the generation of ideas.
  • Transformational leadership style – Leaders are role models for staff and use inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualise their dealings with staff.
  • Future oriented – Leaders envision the future and how the organisation might realise new opportunities.
  • Goal setting – Leaders ensure that individuals are given opportunities and challenges within the context of meeting organisational goals.
  • Influential direction – Leaders build diverse but cohesive teams and are actively involved with the process but do not control the outcomes.
  • Delayed judgement – Leaders delay judging the value of ideas in order to allow for the considered exploration of the ideas and the many possible outcomes.
